Math Centres

Today we began a new addition to our routine...Math Centres.   There are six centres for the students to rotate through and we will be doing math centres once a week.  Each week I will post a picture of the activity of one of the six centres your child will be asked to complete.

One of the math centres includes a valentine number book. Students had to glue the appropriate number of hearts on each number (Numbers 1-9).  This activity involves number recognition and counting skills.

Library Tomorrow

I'm sorry I didn't take the time to explain that our library day will change periodically.  Stonecrest operates on a 5 Day cycle...so when we have a PD day or holiday the Day (Day 1, Day 2, etc.) will be on a different day of the week.  Our library day is Day 4 which falls on a Thursday until our PD Day and Family Day (February 17th and 20th respectively)  after which Day 4 will be on Mondays!!!!!

All that to say:  LIBRARY IS TOMORROW

Mitten

We have been reading the Mitten this past week.  Again with this book we made predictions about the story  using the title and the cover picture.  We also listed the animals we would most likely encounter in the story.  To do so we used our letter/sound knowledge and sounded out the first  letter of the animal's name.

This week we will retell the story using stuffed animals.  Students will then get a chance to colour their own animals and retell the story using a "mitten".  This will be a centre activity and will take approximately a week for all  students to complete.  They will be encouraged to use their "props" to retell the story at home to you.  Thanks for listening to them.

Valentine's Day Party

On Tuesday, February 14, we will be doing a Valentine Card Exchange and Party.

This is a great opportunity for your child to practise writing their own name.  Some children may even wish to write the names of their classmates on their own.  This could be a discouraging task for a child to do all at one time. You can expect that your child will need several different sessions in which to accomplish this.  This should be a fun and authentic writing opportunity for your child.  A class list of names will be sent home in your child's notetote tomorrow.  We will be decorating paper bags in which their classmates will ‘deliver’ valentine cards. On February 14th, we will have a classroom Valentine’s celebration.   The children are invited to wear red or pink.
